About the Program

Project Mission

In 2022, we launched our Therapeutic and Wellness Subsidy for Intercountry Adoptees program, offering financial assistance to aid and supplement their journey toward wellness and healing.

Project Goal

This subsidy program allows adoptees to access therapy, counseling, and wellness services that can be critical in their journey toward healing. Our goal is to empower intercountry adoptees by providing the resources, support, and community connections they need to navigate their unique journeys with confidence and dignity.

We aim to:

  • Address barriers to legal processes like name changes and citizenship applications.
  • Promote mental health and emotional well-being through accessible therapy and counseling.
  • Support professional growth with identity-affirming career counseling.
  • Foster creativity and healing through art, music, and creative therapies.
  • Build a strong, inclusive adoptee community by connecting individuals to networks and resources.

Impact

Our Impact

In 2024 alone, we received 51 applications from intercountry adoptees from diverse backgrounds, including individuals adopted from the Brazil, Cambodia, China, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Bangladesh, Korea, Romania and Russia.

We were proud to provide support with:

  • Financial assistance for the U.S. name-change process and country of origin citizenship application process.
  • Access to multiple sessions with therapists/clinicians, prioritizing mental health and emotional support.
  • Identity-affirming career counseling to help adoptees navigate their professional paths with confidence.
  • Engagement in art, music, and creative therapy, recognizing the therapeutic value of creative expression.
  • Opportunities to attend the IKAA and KAAN conferences, fostering connections within the adoptee community and offering valuable resources and insights.

Review Committee

Our Review Committee

We believe in providing thoughtful, meaningful support tailored to the unique experiences of intercountry adoptees. That’s why our review team is composed of five adoptee professionals who bring their expertise, compassion, and lived experiences to every application.

Recipient Testimony

— 2024 Awardee, Russian Adoptee

I was adopted from Russia as a child to the United States of America. I have been wanting to find my biological family for about 27 years. In June of 2024, I had to pay to hire a private investigator to find my biological aunt and two cousins. Unfortunately, my biological mother died but I was able to receive an official death certificate. The IAMAdoptee subsidy covered two-thirds of the cost needed for the search. In previous years, I had not been able to start or complete my search because the payment was about $1,000. Thank you IAMAdoptee for contributing financially to this endeavor, it was a blessing to me in my search for answers.

— 2024 Awardee, Korean Adoptee

I traveled to Korea in May to meet my biological family. Between the airfare, translation services, hotel and foods the money definitely helped with financing this trip. Thank you again.

I’m so grateful for the gift this year. This support allowed me to dive deeper with a teacher, as I’m celebrating my sensitivities and feeling into adoptee wounds.
