Vietnamese Heritage Camp

July 14, 2016 - July 17, 2016

Vietnamese/Thai Heritage Camp is a culturally combined camp, and one of a handful of camps in the US specifically designed for families with children adopted from Vietnam and Thailand. Committed to exploring Vietnamese and Thai culture and growing as adoptive families, it is sponsored by the highly respected Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families non-profit organization.

We had a very successful camp in 2015 – the first we combined with the Thai Heritage Camp. The campers, parents, counselors, and both Vietnamese & Thai community volunteers so enjoyed being with the larger group, and learning about Vietnamese culture and Thai culture during separate workshops over the same long weekend. The Vietnamese Heritage Camp families welcomed the Thai Heritage Camp families with open arms, and loved having the Thai culture part of their camp experience. The kids and parents all connected so strongly, and immediate friendships were made. It was such a win-win for everyone that we have decided to keep the two camps together on the same dates again in 2016!

Our 2016 theme is “Mekong Strong.” As our two camps join together, there has always been something strong that connects us, the powerful Mekong River. Both Vietnam and Thailand share this amazing river. Join us on a journey from Thailand to Vietnam, honoring Mae Nam “Mother of Water” and the Mekong Delta.

With great pride in our children’s countries and heritage, we are Mekong Strong. As adoptive families coming together we are stronger side by side.

As always, we will explore the unique gifts and challenges that come with being transracial adoptive families. As our children grow, they will be dealing with issues faced by every child of color, no matter their country of birth. At camp, our children are with families just like theirs and they are surrounded by campers, counselors and community members who look like them. We enthusiastically celebrate their birth county, and we also celebrate adoption as a culture of its own. The impact and importance of being with families “just like ours” at camp cannot be understated. It creates bonds between our children and our families that may not easily found in our communities and other areas of our daily lives.
