Mentorship Programs for

Intercountry Adoptees

Mentorship programs provide adoptees with the opportunity to seek community and navigate their identity as many programs offer personalized guidance and support from individuals who may have shared similar experiences or understand the complexities of adoption.

Mentorship can foster a sense of belonging and connection, countering feelings of isolation that adoptees might experience. A mentor can provide valuable insights and practical advice, helping adoptees work through the nuances of their identity and personal history.

By building a supportive relationship with a mentor, adoptees can gain confidence, receive encouragement and resources, and develop coping strategies that enhance their overall well-being. Mentorship programs not only aid in their journey toward self-discovery but can also help adoptees build a network of community support.

Mentorship Programs for Intercountry Adoptees

  • Also Known As Inc. Mentorship Program

The Youth Mentorship Program includes children aged 7 to 12 years old. The Teen Mentorship Program includes children 13 to 18 years old. Each month, the two programs meet separately and participate in a group activity in the New York City area along with their adult adoptee mentors.

The goals of both programs for participants are:

    1. To foster interpersonal relationships with peers and adults who have similar life experiences and/or backgrounds
    2. To develop a positive sense of self as part of a community of adoptees and with the support of the mentors
    3. To promote an appreciation of diversity

To accomplish these goals, Also-Known-As Mentorship Programs foster a safe and inclusive environment where mentees and mentors can thrive. Participants have the opportunity to be part of a community group reflective of their life experiences; discuss important topics related to adoption such as identity, family, and belonging; and participate in exciting activities in the New York City area.
