Adoptees of Color Workshop (LA)

This no-cost workshop is an essential part of a long-term research project sponsored by UCSC and Boston College. Participants, as research subjects, will be asked to review and sign an informed consent form and complete a post workshop survey.

This workshop may be powerful for adoptees of color, particularly, as it draws on the use of body and voice in an act of empowerment. For participants who may have experience with more traditional forms of therapy, such as psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy, this workshop may help expand healing by focusing on the body.

Interested parties must email [email protected] to reserve a spot. Showing up without a reservation is not an option. All participants with spots will receive an email a few days before the workshop with full directions on what to bring, etc.

Acting and Singing with Archetypes is a method of actor training developed by Frankie Armstrong and Janet B. Rodgers that combines body, voice, and imagination to fully embody dramatic characters. Archetypes are found across cultures through stories, myths, and legends. Some of them include: the Lover, the Trickster, the Noble Warrior, the Creator/Destroyer, Lucifer, the Mother, etc. We are interested in adapting this actor training method to create brave spaces for adoptees of color to explore the many dimensions of their identity, and to become inspired by the discovery of new embodied and imaginative possibilities. Participants will be led through imaginative journeys and use their bodies, voices, and personal imagery to explore the Archetypes, which are followed by reflection and discussion. As we explore the Archetypes, we can potentially learn more about our personal relationships to aspects of our identity and may be empowered by the possibility new choices that live inside of us. You do not need any previous experience or training in this method to participate.
